Cigarette Cards / Tobacco Cards:Cigarette cards were inserted into packets of cigarettes to advertise or promote sales. They normally had a picture on the front and a related description and name of the issuer on the back. These cards were issued mainly from the end of the 19th century till the beginning of World War II, when due to severe paper rationing cigarette card production ground to a halt. Cards were also produced for other products such as tea, soap, chocolate and many others. These cards are known as trading cards or trade cards. During the period between the two world wars, cigarette cards were more dominant than trading cards. This is why trading cards are quite often referred to as 'cigarette cards'. After WWII, cigarette cards lagged behind and tea cards and bubble gum cards took the lead. Cigarette cards have one important advantage over other collectibles - they were specifically issued to be collected. The manufacturers issued cards they knew would appeal to their customers such as glamour, sports, transport, wildlife and many others. By issuing high quality cards in sets, they knew that this would help persuade many customers to keep coming back for more. Maybe the cards became more addictive than the product that they came with. Cigarette cards have stood the test of time since they are just as widely popular now as they were when they were first issued - making them timeless. The age and history gives them an added charm and provides a breathtaking view of how life used to be when they were issued. Many cards were issued on different wars, propaganda and talented movie stars and sportsmen and much more. Since not many cigarette cards were issued after WWII, they are becoming more and more scarce. Some cards are extremely valuable. Their value will inevitably rise with time especially with the advent of worldwide trading on the net.
